In addition to the credentials above, I have a Ph.D. in biology, which had a strong interdisciplinary emphasis in psychology, from the University of Massachusetts, a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in Developmental Psychology at the University of Denver, and an M.A. in New Testament from Denver Baptist Seminary. I have served on the faculty in Psychology at Oklahoma Baptist University, in Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and the FPG Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am currently Director of Graduate Programs in Counseling and Professor of Pastoral Care and Psychology at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Charlotte.

Philosophy
I work with my clients to help them achieve their personal goals for growth and wholeness. I believe that adult intimate relationships are based on a loving bond that provides safety and support for the individuals. I help individuals and couples to create safety to share their thoughts and feelings with each other. When a person feels safe and understood they are more able to open their inner life with its needs and disappointments. This opens up new possibilities to develop and deepen loving relationships. I believe that emotional and spiritual growth are closely intertwined. Therapy can help untangle problems which get in the way of relationships with others and with God. With regard to sexual issues, I believe a multi-disciplinary approach towards diagnosis and treatment is important. Referral to medical colleagues in the Center for Sexual Health and Education (www.bestsexualadvice.com) trained in sexual medicine may be appropriate for additional evaluations.
