About
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Reality Based, and Person Centered Treatments are utilized to help individuals heal and improve their quality of life. When working with individuals that experienced sexual trauma, the focus is on helping them perceive themselves as survivors rather than victims. Sensitive and empathic interventions with individuals dealing with issues around sexual orientation is one of my areas of specialty. Therapy focuses on acceptance of sexual identity, coping with stigma, development of a support system, and exploration and acknowledgment of ideals and values. Gender identity issues are also addressed in my clinical practice. I work with transgender and other gender variant individuals to accept and promote healthy gender expression. Gender transition related services, including referrals for hormone therapy and sex confirmation surgery (if applicable), are offered. Interventions with this population focus on promoting self esteem and well being.
Specialization
I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunctions as well as in sexual orientation and gender-related issues. I am also a polyamory-aware professional with a positive perspective on multiple relationships. My general practice focuses on the treatment of depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse, impulse control disorders, and the emotional consequences of bullying (for youths and adults) and other social issues.
Philosophy
My professional philosophy consists of bringing into the psychotherapy process the concept of respect for the self and others. In treatment, although I consider myself to be a mediator between the individual and his/her particular problem, I encourage my clients to have respect for themselves and for others, to keep in mind the importance of wisely utilizing their human rights, and to put in practice their freedom of choice. In addition, I believe everyone should be given the opportunity of being listened to and allowed to make his or her own decisions. I also believe that the education component can be crucial to address some issues during the psychotherapy process. Taking into consideration my professional philosophy my goals for the sex therapy process consist of the following: -Help clients increase their knowledge and understanding of their sexual needs and issues. -Promote a respectful, safe, ethical, and confidential environment in which clients can deal with their sexual problems and concerns. - Guide clients to accept and be willing to deal with their sexual needs, problems, and concerns. -Guide the client through a respectful process of working with their sexual problems that will allow him/her/couple to achieve sexual satisfaction according to their expectations and personal practices. -Help the clients develop the tools to prevent further sexual issues and develop relapse prevention strategies to maintain the progress they have made throughout the sex therapy process. -Promote healthy manifestation of the personΒs gender and sexual identity.
